Above Knee Prosthesis
Above Knee Prosthesis
Above-knee (AK) limb loss (also called transfemoral amputation) refers to amputation or absence of the leg above the knee. Individuals with an amputation above the knee usually begin the prosthetic fitting process several weeks after surgery. As you begin your rehabilitation process, you will work with a prosthetist who is trained in the design, fabrication, and fitting of prosthetic limbs. It is important to talk to your prosthetist about your expectations and concerns so he or she can address your specific needs.
There will be many questions along the way as you prepare for your life as an amputee and the best course to take is to communicate with those on your rehabilitation team. Your physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist and prosthetist are those who are here to help you become a successful wearer of a prosthetic device but it is ultimately up to you to take charge of your care and your life as an amputee.
Writing an accurate prescription for a prosthesis or replacement consumables comes from the referring physician. Specific documentation must also exist in your medical record from a recent visit with that referring physician for your insurance to consider coverage.
